Hosting a personal site on GitHub Pages is free, fast, and gives you a clean place to publish work. The first step is creating a repository named username.github.io. Anything you push to its main branch goes live automatically.
I started with a plain HTML page to make sure the deployment worked. Once that was live, I switched to Jekyll, which GitHub Pages builds for you with no extra setup.
The biggest lesson was to keep things simple at the start. You can always add tooling later, but a site that’s published is more useful than one that’s perfect on your laptop.
